Double Chin

What is Double Chin?
A double chin, medically known as submental fullness, refers to the appearance of excess fullness beneath the chin that reduces the definition between the face and neck.
For some individuals, it results from the accumulation of fat beneath the chin. For others, it may be caused by loose skin, reduced skin elasticity, or age-related changes within the deeper support structures of the face.
What Causes a Double Chin?

Localised Fat Accumulation
Fat deposits beneath the chin are one of the most common causes of submental fullness. Even individuals who are otherwise slim may develop a double chin due to genetics.
Skin Laxity
As collagen and elastin naturally decline with age, the skin loses firmness and elasticity. Loose skin beneath the chin can create the appearance of a fuller neck and less defined jawline.
Ageing
Ageing affects multiple layers of the face, including the skin, connective tissues, and deeper support structures. These gradual changes allow soft tissues to descend, reducing jawline definition.
Genetics
Some individuals naturally inherit a tendency to develop fullness beneath the chin regardless of their body weight.
Weight Changes
Weight gain may increase fat accumulation beneath the chin, while significant weight loss can leave behind loose skin that contributes to a less defined profile.
Posture and Muscle Changes
Poor posture and weakening of the neck muscles over time may contribute to a softer appearance of the jawline, although they are usually not the primary cause of a double chin.
