Eye Bag

What are Eye Bags?

Eye bags refer to puffiness or fullness beneath the lower eyelids that creates a swollen or bulging appearance. They develop when the delicate tissues around the eyes gradually weaken, allowing fat beneath the eyes to become more prominent.

In some individuals, loose skin and fluid retention may further contribute to the appearance of under-eye bags. Although eye bags become more common with age, genetics also play an important role, meaning they can affect younger individuals as well.

What Causes Eye Bags?

Eye Bag

Weakening of the Orbital Septum

The orbital septum is a thin membrane that helps hold the natural fat around the eyes in place. As it weakens with age, fat gradually protrudes forward, creating visible puffiness beneath the eyes.

Skin Laxity

Collagen and elastin naturally decline over time, allowing the lower eyelid skin to become thinner and less supportive.

Fat Prolapse

Rather than developing new fat, existing fat pads become more prominent as the surrounding tissues weaken.

Fluid Retention

Temporary swelling caused by allergies, lack of sleep, high salt intake, or lifestyle factors may make eye bags appear more noticeable.

Genetics

Some individuals naturally inherit more prominent under-eye fat pads, causing eye bags to develop earlier.
